Les Vigneaux takes its name from the practice of cultivating vines which have occupied the hills since ancient times. Today, the village's coat of arms, bearing a vine, the magnificent trellises on the older houses, the wooden balconies and the ruins of old building which houses wine presses, are testimony to a culture from times gone by.
You will find a symbolic vine in our vegetable patch.
Situated on the banks of the Gyronde, at a height of 1100 meters, the village is home to 500 inhabitants and sits at the gateway to the valley of Vallouise and the Ecrins mountain range and benefits from a stunning panorama.
Dominated by the elegant silhouette of the Saint-Laurent church’s bell tower, which is classed as a historic monument, the village sits harmoniously within the landscape, backed by the limestone wall of the Montbrison (2818m).
For sundials enthusiast, the parsonage sundial with its republican hours, is, on its own, worth a detour.
Les Vigneaux is a charming village which provides easy access to a variety of summer and winter mountain activities either sportive or educational. From the gite, you can access the GR50 (long distance trail), the Compostelle pilgrimage trail, Vallouise, L’Argentière-la-Bessée, Puy-Saint-Vincent, Ailefroide and the Pré de Mme Carle of the fortified medieval town of Briançon.
The carline, also called silver thistle or carline barometer, was present on the site of the gite 20 years ago and gave it its name.
A sun flower, the carline was hung above front doors to protect form evil spirits. Today, at the gite, they serve as weather indicators (as they open and shut according to the hygrometry) or simply as decorations!
